Letter from the MSA President

To everyone in the Midlothian Soccer Association

I want to thank everyone for allowing me to serve as President these last five years. I am proud beyond words of this soccer association, its coaches, its players, its parents, its volunteers and its accomplishments. I am sorry to say that I no longer have the time needed to adequately fulfill the demands of my position and will turn down the nomination for Thursday’s Board election. Between teaching at MHS and Navarro College and kids going off to college, I just do not have the time that MSA deserves. However, I leave MSA in great hands. MSA could not ask for a better group of individuals than we have on the Board right now, any of whom would make an excellent replacement. Please join me in supporting the new President.

See you at the pitch.

Stephen Toon
MSA President

Thor Guard Lightning Warning System

A Thor Guard Lightning Warning System has been installed at Hawkins Spring Park. The Thor Guard System Base Station Sensor and Transmitter are located on top of the concession building at Hawkins Spring Park. The sensor continuously monitors the atmosphere's electrostatic energy as far away as 15 miles and evaluates the potential for lightning within an area of approximately 2 miles in radius. When the conditions increase to a point where lightning may occur, the Thor Guard horns sound a single 15 second long blast and the strobe light on the Thor Guard Warning System begins flashing. If you hear the horns or see the strobe light seek appropriate shelter for the duration of the alert. All outdoor activities must cease during the alert period to protect the visitors and users of Hawkins Spring Park. Appropriate shelters include buildings, automobiles/trucks, and when one of those is not available seek a low-lying area. However, if the conditions appear unsafe and an alert alarm has not sounded, common sense should be your guide and activities should still cease despite the absence of a Thor Guard warning.

When the Thor Guard sensor detects that the danger has passed (a minimum of 10 minutes after the original alarm) it will send the all-clear signal. The strobe light will stop flashing and three separate 5 second long blasts will sound. After the all-clear signal is sounded it is safe, according to the Thor Guard system, to resume outdoor activities. Again common sense should still govern, and if the conditions do not appear to be safe to resume outside activity it is best to wait until the weather circumstances change regardless of an all clear from Thor Guard.

Due to the unpredictability of weather patterns it may be possible for the alert to sound multiple times within an hour or even sound when there are clear skies and no danger. While stopping and restarting athletic activities due to Thor Guard warnings may result in some frustration, and even anger, it is important to remember that the Thor Guard system’s warnings should be heeded at all times. The potential risk to people is too great to ignore and the consequences of an accident are too severe. Many of the lightning deaths and injuries that occur each year are from the first lightning strike from an incoming storm or from the rear of a storm that appears to have passed through the area. The chance of these types of tragedies can be minimized by using the Thor Guard system, which relies on monitoring the atmospheric conditions not visible to the human eye.

The consession building has Thor Guard informational signs near the entrance to the restrooms.

GAMES POLICY:
As soon as the Thor Guard Warning System, field marshal or referee chairman give the directive to stop play due to weather threat, all games will be immediately stopped. Players, officials and spectators must leave the fields and seek a shelter for the duration of the threat (cars are strongly suggested as the space around the concession stand is very limited). Should the referees feel, using their best judgment, that a potential threat is present, they HAVE the authority to stop the games even before the field marshal or referee chairman.

Since there is no way to determine how long the threat will last, the following rules will apply for all games, regardless of who stops them (field marshal or referee):

1. Any game not started (initial kick-off) will be delayed 30 minutes. Should the Thor Guard Warning System, field marshal or referee chairman determine within 30 minutes that the threat is no longer in place, the game can start. Beyond the 30 minutes timeframe, the game will be considered cancelled and every effort will be made to reschedule it (subject to time constraints and field availability).

2. Any game being played and stopped BEFORE the second half kick-off will be considered cancelled and every effort will be made to reschedule it (subject to time constraints and field availability). For the BSW standings divisions, the score will NOT count and considered INVALID for the standings.

3. Any game being played and stopped AFTER the second half kick-off will be considered valid and will NOT be rescheduled. For the BSW standings divisions, the score will count and considered VALID for the standings.

Just because the skies look relatively clear, a lightning strike can still occur.

Thanks for your cooperation and helping put the safety of our youth and spectators first.

Midlothian Soccer Youth Academy - Mondays 5:30PM - 7:30PM

Midlothian Soccer Association will hold a youth soccer academy / skills training program available to boys & girls ages 5-10 each Monday night from 5:30-7:30. We have acquired the services of a certified skills training coach who specializes in working with these age groups. This instructor will work with those players who wish to devote a little extra time to furthering their individual skills. If there is enough interest in a specific age group, teams may be formed to play in another league (usually on late Sunday afternoons) in addition to their regular recreational league. Even if you don't wish to participate in another league, the skills training in itself will be an invaluable tool in gaining more experience to become a better player. The sessions will be held at Hawkins Spring Park and will cost $5 per player.

For current information about the academy please call (469)834-8309
